I did a selfscan on Maxtor 2b020h1 dsp drive it took about 8 hours i connected it to a external power supply with LED connected for monitoring after 8 hours the led switched off then i connected the drive to victoria for scanning its model changed to 2b010h1 and capacity changed from 20gb to 10gb and the surface was full of bad sectors what should i do .
Thanks in advance .

Hmmm .....
You could try running selfscan (at 10G) again (clear P/Glist) ... If it's still full of red blobs on victoria then probably surface/head degraded ...

They say always clear P- and G- list BEFORE selfscan. At htis point probably the passport is changed and you'll have to switch back to the exact model again (if possibile)... anyway it's normal at factory level that drives that fail the quality acceptance are re-qualified for a lower capacity by killing the defective surfaces/heads , Maxtor probably has only automated this procedure with the factory selfscan :D . BTW have you seen drives with one label over another on the top ?

Hmmm .....
IMHO, there's a threshold limit set in the selfscan script. A factory pre-set limit will determine whether the drive will retain original capacity or have reduced capacity. I've seen Athena 20s go down to 15 or 10. I've also seen Athena 10s go up to 15 or 20.
The Athena in question seems to be able to complete selfscan, although IMHO 8 hours is a wee bit too long for Athena selfscan. Normally it completes between 5-6 hours ... The longer time could indicate degraded surface/head ...

To return the size 20G is possible so:
1. Start SelfScan.
2. Wait for 15-20 minutes.
3. Power off/on. Look 2B020H1.
4. Stop SelfScan.
5. Clear P, G-List.
6. Start SelfScan again.
If many bad sectors, again will turn out 10G.

i rewrite the 4F module to the hdd then it became 2b0201 <20 gb> again but it was full of bad sectors then i run selfscan again the drive again became 10 gb .
To Patriot how can 10gb become 20gb ?
